Booklet Printing

Booklet printing / catalogues / multi page newsletters, especially in small quantities (up to 500) is one of our specialties. We have been producing this kind of work for over twelve years. We define booklets as saddle stitched publications — that is, publications consisting of two or more sheets of paper, bound together in the spine with two staples, folded in half and consisting of up to 64 pages. Publications of more than 64 pages are usually too thick to satisfactorily saddle stitch. They often have an unsightly bulge at the spine. If your publication has more than 64 pages, we offer and recommend perfect bound books.

You can click on any one of the booklet sizes below to go straight to the product page.

All our booklets — A4, A5 and DL booklets can be printed in portrait or landscape format. We (and you) are not strictly bound by these sizes, but they are the most economical.

"Playbill" BookletQuantities

We print smaller quantities — up to around 500 copies — on a digital printing press. Larger quantities are printed on high quality offset presses. You can choose from as few as ten copies, to as many as 5000 copies. Choose from four pages plus a four page cover, to 60 pages plus a four page cover. Numbers of pages are in increments of four pages, as each sheet of paper in a booklet has four pages printed on it. It doesn’t make sense, for instance, for you to produce a nine page booklet plus cover, as there will be three blank pages you will pay for.

What is a Page?

Sometimes customers are confused as to the definition of a page. A page is like the page of a book. For instance, page 23 of a booklet is one page, page 24 is on the same sheet as page 23, but is a separate page. The same sheet will also have pages 1 and 2 of a 24 page booklet.

Paper Types

We offer a large range of papers from 80gsm bond stock to 170gsm satin or gloss for the text (inside) pages, and 80gsm bond to 250gsm satin or gloss for covers. We are not bound by these paper weights, and if you would like a heavier cover, for instance, ask us for a custom quote.

Colour

Booklets can be printed in full colour throughout or in black and white throughout. Covers are always in full colour on the outside, and can be colour, black and white, or blank on the inside. Because of the way booklets are printed, it is usually not practical to print a mixture of colour and black and white internal pages. It is not impossible, but you’d really need to know what you are doing, and you’d need to talk to us first.

Finishing

We look after creep (allowing for the thickness of the paper from the inside pages to the outside pages), and we carefully collate, saddle stitch, fold and trim the booklet.

We offer a gloss or matt celloglaze on the outside of the cover to add great impact to your publication. We can also celloglaze the inside cover. In humid environments, this can help prevent paper curl, which can occur when moisture is absorbed by the side of the paper that is not celloglazed.

Proofs

You can choose a PDF proof at no charge, or a hard copy proof for an additional charge. Booklets are often complex documents and more can go wrong than with simple single sheet documents. We therefore recommend you consider asking for a hard copy proof.

"Rock'n Guitar 1" BookletHelp and advice on putting your booklet together

Kainos Print is committed to customer education. We realise that some of our customers are experts, but some are worried that their lack of knowledge and experience will mean their project won’t turn out they way they want. We have made a considerable range of resources available on our web site to help all our customers. Click here to access these resources. In particular, we have created a page specifically designed to help you prepare your files for successful, quality printing. Click here to access the ‘how to prepare your files’ page.

Multiple designs for the price of the total ordered

Wherever possible we offer to print more than one design for the cost of the total number ordered. Our capacity to offer this benefit has some limitations, based on the presses we use to print the booklets, which in turn is determined by the quantity ordered. The upper limit for the total ordered is 500 booklets. They must be the same type of publication (we can’t mix perfect bound books and saddle stitched booklets for instance), size — A4, A5, or DL — though not necessairily the same number of pages, and they must be ordered and files must be submitted at the same time. We don’t specify an upper limit for the number of designs, but we would not expect to be asked to print any more than four designs. We may print more designs by negotiation.

White papers for authors and self-publishers on printing, publishing and promoting your own book

Andew Hingeley of Kainos Print has written a brief white paper on short run book publishing. It asks whether or not you have a book in you (and suggests that you probably do), economical book formats, paper choices, what software to use, basic book conventions to follow, useful material on ISBN numbers and Cataloguing in Publication data, setting a selling price, and promoting your book. Click here to download the white paper (PDF). He has also published an interview with a client who has done a superb job at promoting his self-published book. Click here to go to the interview. A client of ours, Ian Irvine, author of the best selling Runcible Jones children’s books (amongst others) has written a comprehensive paper on everything an author needs to know before (and after) approaching a publisher. Click here to download the paper (PDF).

ISBN Numbers

Many booklets (children’s books for instance) will potentially benefit from having an ISBN number. The ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is a 13-digit number that uniquely identifies books and book-like products published internationally. Each number identifies a unique edition of a publication, from one specific publisher, allowing for more efficient marketing of products by booksellers, libraries, universities, wholesalers and distributors. We have prepared a detailed guide explaining what an ISBN number is and the benefits of obtaining one. We provide links to various publications and application forms. Click here to go to our Guide to ISBN numbers.

"Rock'n Guitar 2" BookletCataloguing-in-Publicaton (CiP) data

Self publishers should consider taking up the free service offered to publishers by the National Library of Australia to provide a bibliographic record for a book before it is published. Click here to go to our CiP Guide.

"Mame" BookletUnderstand the difference between pages, leaves and sheets

Throughout our web site, we use the standard convention in defining pages and leaves of a publication. For instance, an A4 sheet printed on two sides is a two page flyer. It is a one page flyer if it is printed on one side only. An A4 saddle stitched booklet of, say, twelve pages plus a four page cover consists of six internal A4 leaves printed on both sides, therefore twelve pages. The cover consists of two A4 leaves printed on both sides, therefore four pages. Before the booklet is bound, it consists of four A3 sheets, three for the internal pages and one for the cover. Each sheet has four pages printed on it — two on one side and two on the other. A perfect bound book consisting of fifty leaves printed on both sides is a 100 page book plus a cover which would normally consist of two leaves printed on one side only.
